Madonna with Angels

Madonna with Angels

Madonna with Angels (1484)
tempera on a wooden panel

An important work of Gothic panel painting from the Spiš region by an unknown author, probably connected to the workshops of Levoča.

The painting was originally part of the main altar in the Church of St. Egidius in Poprad. After restoration, the original was moved to the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, while a faithful copy is displayed in the church today.

Mary is depicted as the Queen of Heaven. Symbolic elements include:

– cherry – abundance of paradise,
– book – wisdom and God’s law,
– parrot – its feathers are waterproof, just as Mary is untouched by sin.
